Hurricane Maria Relief

Below is a letter from Bishop DiMarzio in regards to aid to Puerto Rico. As a school community, we will also accept donations and send them to Catholic Charities. We will collect until Friday, October 13th. Donations may be brought in the morning or at dismissal to the school basement. Thank you in advance for your generosity in helping our brothers and sisters.

We also sent close to $700 to the Student to Student collection of the National Catholic Education Association for the schools in Texas and Florida

Sister Francis Marie

Dear Pastor / Administrator:

In the last week, daily we are witnessing the devastation that Hurricane Maria wrought on the Island of Puerto Rico. This has not merely affected the people living on the Island itself. Rather, this horrific storm has also impacted many of our sisters and brothers here in our Diocese in Brooklyn and Queens who have family still living in Puerto Rico and are unable to communicate with them because of the destruction on the Island.

We all feel their pain and share their concern for the well-being of the residents of Puerto Rico. With this in mind, while I ask you to continue to pray for the victims of Hurricane Maria, I ask that you join in action to provide some immediate relief to the people of Puerto Rico.

I am requesting that each parish take up a collection of "material goods" in the next week to ten days. Attached you will find a list of "material goods" that we have been asked to provide. No clothing will be accepted.

I suggest that you announce the collection at all Masses this weekend and invite your parishioners to drop off their donations to an appropriate location at your parish during the week or next weekend.

Catholic Charities will bring the donations to its collection center to package the items for shipment to Puerto Rico. Jet Blue Airlines is generously arranging for the items to be flown to Puerto Rico. You may be assured that Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens is in contact with Catholic Charities in Puerto Rico to arrange for the distribution of the items to the victims of Hurricane Maria.

Thanking you for answering yet another call to assist those affected by a this recent natural disaster, and remembering you in prayer for your generosity. I am,

Sincerely in Christ,
Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Ph.D., D.D.
Bishop of Brooklyn
